This home was fantastic all around.
Perfect location right on the Indian Ocean. Great for morning walks up and down the coast. The home itself was immaculate, exactly as described. A lot of thought has gone into the design of this home. It is welcoming, warm and has all the amenities to make for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The hosts (Lolitta and Ryan) are superb - super responsive, helpful, friendly and they go the extra mile to ensure the little details are taken care of. It was a nice touch for the hosts to meet us at check-in to show us around the house and orientate us on the surroundings. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back.

The Residence

Three levels step up from West Coast Drive. The garage is at street level. Living, dining, kitchen, family room and two bedrooms on the garden side are on the main level, which opens to the porch at the front and the terrace and garden at the back. Upstairs are the main bedroom, with its arched window and ensuite, a second bedroom that opens to the balcony, and a study with a double bed.

The pool Frank built

In the 1930s, war veteran Frank Mettam began cutting a swimming pool into the limestone reef here, and his family kept at it with him into the 1960s. Today Mettams Pool is one of Perth’s best-loved snorkelling spots. It is across the road from the house.

Stairs and a ramp lead down from the car park. There are showers, toilets and picnic tables.

How the pool got its name

Frank Mettam came home from the First World War with serious leg injuries, and took to walking and swimming to rebuild his strength. He wanted a coastal pool with calmer water, protected from sharks.

In the 1930s and 40s this coast was, in the words of his grandson Todd, “mostly bush and wild horses”. Frank began clearing a pool in the limestone reef with a crowbar and explosives from the crew building West Coast Highway. His children and grandchildren worked on it with him into the 1960s.

Todd still has the crowbar. The pool is still known by the family’s name.

Around North Beach

The house is on West Coast Drive in North Beach, on Perth’s northern coast. The pool is across the road. The rest is a short walk or drive.

The coastal path runs along the ocean in both directions, for a walk, a run or a ride.

A short walk south, Bennies serves coffee, juices and easy bites above Bennion Beach.

The dining precinct of North Beach, close enough to walk to for breakfast or dinner. Yelo is the local favourite for coffee and açai bowls.

Maestro Sourdough Pizza makes Neapolitan-style pizza on a long-rising sourdough base, and has been named in the 50 Top Pizza guide for Asia-Pacific.

Mister D’Arcy pairs Asian-inspired share plates with cocktails and beers on tap, in a bar setting.

Trigg Point has some of Perth’s most reliable surf, and the beach has room for every level.

Island Market, on the beachfront, does Middle Eastern-inspired plates, seafood and cocktails. Canteen, right on the beach, has coffee and takeaway.

On the first and third Saturday of the month, from 8 am to 1 pm, plus a few extra dates. The 2026/27 season opens on Saturday 24 October and runs to 20 March.

Entry is free. So are the yoga and wellness classes on market mornings.

The Scarborough Sunset Markets fill the foreshore with food stalls, makers and live music: Thursday evenings over summer, and Saturdays through winter.

For a pint afterwards, The Galway Hooker is a great Irish pub on The Esplanade, with live music and a well-poured Guinness.

The closest big shopping centre, expanded in 2021: close to 300 shops including Myer and Zara, three supermarkets in the Fresh Market, and a HOYTS cinema.

AQWA, the Aquarium of Western Australia, is here, with its walk-through underwater tunnel. Ferries leave the harbour for Rottnest Island.

Perth city centre is about 16 km to the south-east, by the Mitchell Freeway.
